Shakespeare in Our Parks Auditions
“Shakespeare in Our Parks” in partnership with South Orange Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs and Maplewood Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs.
The project is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet abridged to run approximately 60 minutes in length. It will be performed live on an outdoor stage at Floods Hill in South Orange. There will be six performances over two weekends in July (9-11th & 16-18th). Tickets will be free, reservations required. For performances the actors will be unmasked and mic’d. The staging will make creative use of social distancing.
Romeo and Juliet will be played by high school aged actors. For this production the characters will be played by cisgendered female, trans female/male, or non-binary actors. The roles will be cast from auditions. For a first audition actors will perform a selection of text from one of Shakespeare’s plays. 15 lines minimum.
The other actors in the company will be experienced professionals. All actors will be paid a stipend for their work. There will be workshops in May. Rehearsals will begin mid-June. Masks and social distancing in workshops and rehearsal will follow CDC guidelines. The director will be Nathan Darrow — a professional actor who has worked extensively on the plays of Shakespeare.
The staging will be simple, beautiful, and experimental. The goal will be to get closer to the story and the characters and the words which render them. The actors will imaginatively explore and share the creative, bold, and disruptive energy of first love requited.
For actors not cast in the production, there may be opportunities to work on Shakespeare scenes and then perform a showcase in July on the outdoor stage. So please come out and meet us!
Performance dates will be July 9-11th and July 16-18th. Workshops will be May 8th & 9th, 15th & 16th. Rehearsals will begin mid-June.
